FOR WEDNESDAY'S CLASS (FEB 3):

Select one or two "significant" passages from "The Accident." Why is it/are they significant?

Be thinking about enslavement in our stories, our authors. And remember -- you may write down your thoughts, questions, things for the class to consider, on the blog.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this. My two quotes are both found on page 1383 of out text book.

    "but who was the victim"

I thought this was important because it outlines the whole entire piece of work. It asks the reader a question that not all think of. Throughout the story people are placing blame on other people looking for the guilty person. But no one even cares to realize who the victim is. I will elaborate more on this quote in class

    My second quote is:

"...He had no incurable disease, yet, all the same, he was waiting to die. No one can escape death..... In every city there is a possibility of death- even if the chance on any given day is one in a million."

I chose this as my secon quote because I feel it is a very "real" statement. It reminds me of the FInal Destination movies but more believable. In life no one can escape death. Eventually it will happen to everyone. I feel like this quote needs to be discussed in class for a solid discussion..

  2. Matt Bronson

The Accident by Gao Xingjian is a very interesting short story with many themes that suggest human nature and responsibility. I picked two quotes that I found significant from this text. They are both on page 1383 and read as follows.

“If she loved him, why didn’t she fulfill her responsibilities as a mother and pick up the child herself?”

“Maybe it was a flaw in his personality and he was always indecisive.”

I find the first quote significant to the theme of human nature I stated above. In a tragic situation no one wants to be blamed. In talk of the family of the child the mother is brought in to the situation. People start to talk and think about her role in the fathers death. They then compare the mother’s love for her husband and why or why not she picked the child up from school. How can a person’s love for another be compared to why or why not they decided to do a simple task. People will to go any limits to avoid the blame.

My second quote also mirrors the statement I have above about the theme’s represented. In the quote the mans personality is compared to why or why not he moved out of the way of the bus in time. How can a person’s personality decide weather they want to live or die?

All in all the people in the story just need to step aside and see that the situation that happened was merely the title. It was an accident.

  3. In the short story "The Accident" it was very interesting to see how people react to an event that happens infront of them. A significant passage that i chose was...

"It's hard to protect yourself against that kind of thing - it's all determinded by fate. In our old village, there was a carpenter who was a good craftsman, but he was very fond of drinking. Once, he was building someone a house and, coming home at night drunk out of his mind, he tripped and smashed his head on a rock." pg. 1382

I chose this passage because it helps to show people that anyone is capable of having an accident even when you are doing nothing wrong. In the case of the short story it was a father just getting his child from nursey school and he ends up getting killed by a bus. Just like in the passage it can be the nicest guy or the meanest but anyone is capable of being in an accident without it really being anyones fault.

Another passage that I chose is..

"Nothing's ever happened to me." pg. 1382

To go along with my statement above it doesn't matter who you are anyone can be in an accident, but most people in life don't think that something bad is going to happen to them until it is to late.
